What is a Prosthodontist?
A prosthodontist is a dental specialist dealing with the preservation, rebuilding and replacement of teeth who has spent an additional four years in full time study advancing his knowledge, ability and skill. Prosthodontics is one of the 5 dental specialties recognized by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
Prosthodontists formulate and execute treatment plans for the construction of corrective biocompatible substitutes or prostheses to restore proper function and esthetics of the mouth, face and jaw. Therefore, they specialize in the restoration of oral function by creating prostheses and restorations (ie: dentures, crowns, implants retained/supported restorations).
Cosmetic dentistry, implants and joint problems all fall under the field of prosthodontics. Due to their extensive training, prosthodontists are frequently called upon to treat cosmetic cases, full mouth implant reconstructions, TMD related disorders and congenital disorders by planning and fabricating various prostheses and orthotic appliances.
